French as a foreign language

The École Pratique des Hautes Études has for many years welcomed a large and growing number of foreign students.

To facilitate their integration, EPHE offers various courses in French as a Foreign Language (FLE), based on the levels of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

These courses are reserved for students registered at the EPHE.

How to register

  • MASTER

Non-francophone students who do not demonstrate a level of proficiency in French equivalent to the CEFR B2 must register in FLE courses.

Non-francophone students who attest to a level of French proficiency equal to or higher than the CEFR B2 may choose either to enrol in another foreign language course or to continue to the higher levels (C1 and C2) of FLE.

Non-francophone students who have never taken a language certification in FLE must take the EPHE level assessment test (written and oral). To do so, they will receive an invitation email in September 2020. The tests will be held in the second week of October 2020.
